Down the TBR Hole | #6 The Curse of February 2018 and Owned Books

Down the TBR Hole was originally created by Lia @ Lost in a Story

Welcome back to my Down the TBR Hole series, friends. I haven’t done a Down the TBR Hole post for well over a month now meaning that my TBR list has been slowly creeping back up again, though I have been hardcore sticking to the DtTH deadlines I set for myself which has been a massive help.

Let’s plunge in and see what’s up on the chopping block this session!

How it works:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 books)
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

Confluence by Paul McAuley

Added: February 2018

I have such a complicated relationship with this book as I’ve had it since 2015/2016. I got it in my first ever Nine Worlds goodie bag and love the sound of it but also the book is huge… I need to either hurry up and read it or accept its never going to happen.

Verdict: Keep! ✅
Deadline: September 2019

White Teeth by Zadie Smith

Added: February 2018

ACOMAF marked the start of me adding all of my owned books to my GR TBR list in the hopes it would make me actually read them… White Teeth is another one I’ve owned for a while but haven’t made any moves towards reading it

Verdict: Keep! ✅
Deadline: July 2019

51iTuqxYUML._SX323_BO1,204,203,200_ (1)

The Maze Runner by James Dashner

Added: February 2018

My mum bought me the book set just before I found out about all of the allegations towards Dashner. I kept the books out of financial guilt but haven’t read any yet. If I don’t meet the deadline I’ll just donate the entire set.

Verdict: Keep! ✅
Deadline: July 2019

9780141183411

To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf

Added: February 2018

I got this in a 3 for £10 deal with White Teeth because I wanted to read some more classics but again… never picked it up. My main motivation for wanting to read it though is because I feel like its one that I should have read at least once?

Verdict: Keep! ✅
Deadline: July 2019

590975

The Beautiful and the Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Added: February 2018

Ditto the above for this book. Bought at the same time for the same reasons. I just need to muster the motivation to want to pick them both up?

Verdict: Keep! ✅
Deadline: July 2019

6227080

Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne by David Gaider

Added: February 2018

I really wanted to buy the series after finishing DAI but could only afford the first book secondhand. It was in such poor condition though that I couldn’t read it so would love to get a replacement copy to read. DA forever!

Verdict: Keep! ✅
Deadline: August 2019

29505131

How to be a Disney Historian edited by Jim Korkis

Added: February 2018

Oh the guilt I’m feeling over these books… This is one I was over the moon to receive for Christmas in 2017, didn’t want to read it “too quickly” so left it to long and never read it? Don’t question my poor, poor logic skills here.

Verdict: Keep! ✅
Deadline: August 2019

Neuromancer by William Gibson

Added: February 2018

need to read Neuromancer for my PhD so this one isn’t going to receive a deadline, plus it’s such an astoundingly influential book on so many things (science fiction, science, video games, etc) that it’s one I feel should definitely be read!

Verdict: Keep! ✅

25615932

They Drew as they Pleased: Volume 1 by Dider Ghez

Added: February 2018

Another one to feel guilty over as it was a beautiful Christmas present…

Verdict: Keep! ✅

1502905

The Animal Estate by Harriet Ritvo

Added: February 2018

This was my key text for my undergraduate dissertation and I’ve always wanted to have time to actually read it properly, rather than the one chapter. It’s a book that I’m happy to keep around though so it doesn’t need to be on my TBR.

Verdict: Go! ❌

2555781

The Sport of Kings: Kinship, Class and Thoroughbred Breeding in Newmarket by Rebecca Cassidy

Added: February 2018

Same as above plus Rebecca was my dissertation supervisor. Definitely one I’ll be keeping a hold of for a long time to read whenever I want to!

Verdict: Go! ❌

6184445

The Animals Reader: The Essential Classic and Contemporary Writings edited by Linda Kalof and Amy Fitzgerald

Added: February 2018

There’s only so many times I can say ditto for the above but ditto… (only one more ditto to go)

Verdict: Go! ❌

1105586

Dolly Mixtures: The Remaking of Genealogy by Sarah Franklin

Added: February 2018

Last ditto as above, Dolly Mixtures is also relevant to my PhD as well so I’m hoping to spend more time with this text over the next few years as I’m still focusing on bodies, bio-manipulation, ethics and morality (just now in humans and AI)

Verdict: Go! ❌

22947775

The Museum of Extraordinary Things by Alice Hoffman

Added: February 2018

I own this on kindle and loved how magical it sounded when I originally bought it. However, I’m finding that books I bought a few years ago (like The Night Circus) are books I’m not really interested in reading anymore so I’m going to let this one go from my TBR

Verdict: Go! ❌

14935

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

Added: February 2018

Same story as To the Lighthouse, etc, above as I got them all during my ‘I should read more Classics?’ phase. Except I don’t have much interest in reading this so its another one to let go of on my TBR

Verdict: Go! ❌

17879401

The Black Guard by A.J Smith

Added: February 2018

I found this outside someone’s house, thought maybe I should try a high/dark fantasy book a go even though it’s not my usual thing and then it lived on my shelf for two years… I’ve already donated it though so it can go from my TBR!

Verdict: Go! ❌

930118

Necropolis: London and its Dead by Catharine Arnold

Added: February 2018

Another book I used for one of my dissertations, this time on cemeteries and London’s history! I love anything to do with death and can’t wait to actually read this. I just need to force myself to make time!

Verdict: Keep! ✅
Deadline: August 2019

13190329

Underworld London: Crime and Punishment in the Capital City by Catharine Arnold

Added: February 2018

I own all of the Catharine Arnold books in this London’s history collection. Underworld London is the one I’m not as interested in but still wanted to read as part of the collection

Verdict: Keep! ✅
Deadline: August 2019

843126

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

Added: February 2018

I originally had this on my GR shelf many years ago but removed it as I wasn’t interested in it, then proceeded to buy it secondhand at a market… I’m still not sure if I have any interest in it?

Verdict: Go?! ❓

18143977

All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

Added: February 2018

Same deal as above. I’m pretty sure I originally added it as it won a GR Choice Award in 2014, removed it, then bought it at a market… Another one I’m undecided on!

Verdict: Go?! ❓

17779550

Last Train to Istanbul by Ayse Kulin

Added: February 2018

Nominated in the same category as All the Light… I loved the prospect of reading a book by a Turkish author about Turkish history. I would still love to read this (I NEED MORE TIME?!)

Verdict: Keep! ✅
Deadline: August 2019

34330728

City of Strife by Claudie Arseneault

Added: February 2018

City of Strife is the first Arseneault book I came across and immediately loved the sound of this fantasy book with own voice ace rep. I also have a physical copy of it from my birthday!

Verdict: Keep! ✅
Deadline: September 2019

24769673

Viral Airwaves by Claudie Arseneault

Added: February 2019

I also own an ebook of this dystopian solarpunk book written by Arseneault with even more ace rep in it which makes my little heart so happy. I need to make time for these!

Verdict: Keep! ✅
Deadline: September 2019

34381254

An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon

Added: February 2018

I’ve wanted to read this for SO. GODDAMN. LONG but keep not making time for my owned books. An Unkindness of Ghosts sounds incredible with great rep in it

Verdict: Keep! ✅
Deadline: September 2019

26114130

Everfair by Nisi Shawl

Added: February 2018

EVERFAIR. SOUNDS. INCREDIBLE. I EVEN OWN A COPY. WHY HAVE I NOT READ IT YET? WHO AM I AND WHY AM I FAILING ALL OF MY BELOVED OWNED BOOKS?!

Verdict: Keep! ✅
Deadline: September 2019

35827220 (1)

Dogs of War by Adrian Tchaikovsky

Added: February 2018

I added Dogs of War to my TBR well before ever reading Children of Time because I LOVE the sound of a story told through the perspective of a genetically engineered war dog? Tchaikovsky does amazing things in sci-fi with animals

Verdict: Keep! ✅
Deadline: September 2019

Stats

Keep with deadline: 17/26
Go: 7/26
Undecided(Go?): 2/26

Stats pre-#6 purge: 196
Stats post-#4 purge: 189 (possibly 187)

So… I haven’t done great with removing books this time but in my defense, I own a lot of these books and they survived my Kondo-session where I sorted through a lot of my owned books to decide which to get rid of and which to keep. So, I figure I need to at least give these ones some time to get read! I have also learned my lesson not to just willy-nilly add all of my owned books to my TBR because its a terrible idea haha. I still have quite a few owned books left to work through in my next DtTH post but we are steadily working towards the end of my list ❤

  1. Me, staring desperately at the books you say you used for your dissertation: what on EARTH did you write about 😀

Necropolis actually sounds like it might be useful for this summer seminar I’m doing on attitudes to death.

    Like

    1. hahaha. my undergraduate dissertation was a history/anthropology dissertation on human-animal relations. I did mine on human manipulation of canine bodies from the 19th to 21st century.

Necropolis is good for london history and victorian attitudes towards death. I would also recommend both of Caitlin Doughty’s books (Smoke gets in your eyes… and From here to eternity). If you want any film/tv media, The Casketeers is also really good for indigenous new zealand attitudes towards death!
