WWW Wednesday | 7th August 2019

WWW Wednesday is hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words! All you have to do is answers the following three questions:

What are you currently reading/playing?
What did you recently finish reading/playing?
What do you think you’ll read/play next?

This past week I’ve been able to get back into blogging a little bit more as well as setting aside more time for reading post-YALC which has been making me feel much happier and more like myself. I’m feeling a little bit anxious because I still feel quite isolated from a lot of the blogging community but hopefully, things will pick up again if I can manage to produce content a bit more regularly.

Currently Reading/Playing

record of a spaceborn few

I am finally reading Record of a Spaceborn Few after owning a copy of it for over a year. I was so stoked when it first came out but then psyched myself out of reading it (mistake). I’m glad to finally be reading it though because THIS BOOK… I can’t even put into words how much I love it already. I think it’s definitely my favourite of the Wayfarer books so far. I love the way it’s written, I love the characters, I love the themes in the book. I especially love that there’s a Harmagian ethnographer in this one who is doing fieldwork at the Fleet to learn more about human culture and a MC who is a mortician. This book was clearly written for me.

Civilization V.jpg

Me and my partner bought Civ 5 and all of the DLC for it in a Steam sale a year or two ago, and every so often we will go on a massive Civ 5 binge. This week we have played copious amounts of the game both together and separately. I have a quick game going as Alexander the Great where I’ve managed to be friends with all the other civilisations, and together we’re playing an epic game as Sejong (Korea) attempting for a technology win. Needless to say, it has been a lot of fun although my body needs a rest from all the gaming now xD

I finished reading Music and Malice in Hurricane Town at the weekend and wrote a little mini-review of it for my first Saturday Smalls post. To summarise, the book had a lot of potential but there were some major issues regarding the white-washing of a Louisianan setting and problematic descriptions of black characters. You can read a slightly longer review here.

I bought A Mortician’s Tale in the LudoNarraCon sale on Steam a few months ago and have been itching to play it ever since. Reading Record of a Spaceborn Few has definitely put me in the mood to finally play it so I’m hoping to start playing this weekend if I get time.

I’ve been wanting to read After Atlas ever since I finished reading Planetfall (last year?) but kept putting off buying a copy. I managed to get one at Easter Con though and got it signed by Emma Newman. She’s going to be at World Con next week so I’m hoping I have time to squeeze it in before I go.

What have you been reading/playing this week?

  1. I loved Record of a Spaceborn Few! I think it’s my favorite of her books so far. It’s hard to articulate why I love it so much but it’s title pretty much sums up the book and I love all the little slices of life and what it says about a whole…it’s just a lovely book.
